The Green Building Challenge (GBC) is an international effort, initiated in 1996, to develop a framework for building assessment that can be tailored to conditions in different countries. It includes criteria for assessing the environmental impacts of buildings, benchmarks against which comparisons are made, and weightings of the various criteria. GBC is led by an International Framework Committee (IFC), composed of representatives from approximately 20-25 participating countries, that meets twice each year. Teams from participating countries attend IFC meetings and manage the application of the GBC assessment system (GBTool) to one or more buildings in their countries. The results of these assessments have been showcased at international Sustainable Building conferences held in Vancouver [1998], Maastricht [2000], Oslo [2002], and Tokyo [2005]; the U.S. has showcased five buildings at each of these GBC Sustainable Building (SB) conferences.
7group members have participated in the GBC since 2000 and have consistently been leaders in the discussions and development of the GBTool. For GBC 2000 and 2002, three 7group projects were selected to represent the U.S. team. 7group partners, John Boecker and Marcus Sheffer, assessed and presented those projects for the U.S. team. In 2005, John Boecker led the U.S. team assessment and presentation efforts for the Tokyo SB05 conference.
